Jean Charles de Menezes - gone, but never forgotten

There follows a copy of a missive issued by Justice4Jean, the Jean Charles de Menezes' family campaign for justice after the extra judicial execution of an innocent man at Stockwell underground station. The police have murdered others since and, as with the killing of Jean, have done so with impunity.
* Please circulate widely *

Dear all,

The Justice4Jean Campaign has launched an online petition today, on the 4th anniversary of Jean's death, calling on Transport for London and London Mayor Boris Johnson to allow the Mosaic of Jean Charles de Menezes to be erected outside Stockwell Tube station as a permanent memorial.

The petition reads as follows:
"We the undersigned call on Transport for London and the Mayor of London to allow the Mosaic of Jean Charles de Menezes to be erected outside Stockwell Tube station as a permanent memorial.

Jean Charles De Menezes was an innocent man who died in tragic circumstances after being shot dead by police in 2005. His story has touched people worldwide. The family and local community have maintained a temporary shrine for 4 years, outside Stockwell station, to express the huge amount of public sympathy about the manner and circumstances in which he died. We believe the mosaic, made by the family of Jean Charles with local artists, represents the best and most fitting replacement to this shrine - it celebrates his short life whilst ensuring his tragic death is never forgotten."

Please join us in signing the petition. It takes just 30 seconds, but can truly make a difference.

Once you have signed, you can help even more by asking your friends and family to sign as well.

Thank you!

Nicely done, folks, and thank you for supporting the J4J cause.

I think the time is fast approaching when we're all going to have to organise ourselves to do a little more than sign petitions.

Perhaps it's time to dream up some transitional demands around which we can all unite....

Meanwhile, the mainstream media have managed to squeeze in a story, today of all days, about the killing of a police officer:

'Ruthless' police killer faces 35-year minimum - Crime, UK - The Independent

Elsewhere, in the United Mistakes, Unarmed man in speedos shot dead by police.

Speaking of transitional demands, more of this sort of thing, better coordinated, across industries, across the country, and across the world:

FACTORY UNDER OCCUPATION: Save 600 jobs at Vestas!

Vestas plan to close the UK's only wind turbine factories on the Isle of Wight. Workers are fighting back against the bosses, OCCUPYING THE FACTORY to pressure the government to nationalise the factories and continue production under new management. SAVE JOBS AT VESTAS – SAVE THE PLANET.

Signed.

"FACTORY UNDER OCCUPATION: Save 600 jobs at Vestas!"

We need more of this.

We do, but who's organising it? Locally? Internationally?

Unions seem to specialise mostly in reformist rhetoric rather than any sort of radical politics or any notions of permanent revolution.

Whatever happened to the Internationals?

Appaulling though the murder of JCM was, where is your outrage at the murders of hundreds, if not thousands, of innocent Brazilians at the hands of Brazilian police every year? None of these receives even a tiny percentage of the media coverage that the murder of JCM received. What about China? It seems to me that your agenda goes a little further than rightly calling for justice for JCM. It's always white people, it's always the West and our institutions that are racist, brutal, etc. Look how quickly the J4J cause gets mixed up in the whole anti-Capitalist, Hands off Iraq oil, freedom for Palestine thing. It reminds me of those protests at universities that always centre around the atrocities commited by Israel and America, but never India, China, Burma, etc.

And on a more domestic level, the murder of JCM does not mean our entire police force is a brutal, racist, killing-machine. Stick to the issue and you will gain more support.

But you just asked why he was not addressing many other issues in a single post.

He's only human, for god's sake, he can't do both, so which is it to be?

Hi Ant.
Any news of Khalid Khaliq yet?

I believe he should have been released in July 09 having had 18 months of his life snuffed out and to forever be labeled some kind of terrorist.

May I suggest you and/or J7T interview him to further highlight the injustice he suffered?

All the best...

fyi: TPS asked me the same thing about 2 years ago.

No news thus far, I'm afraid.

Thanks for the interview suggestion. We shall see what transpires.

TPS?

I've tried getting updated info about Mr. Khaliq but no success. If he served the 1 year and 6 months in jail from the the date of sentence, then I think he should have been released in July 09.

TPS = The Pakistani Spectator.
They sent me list of Q's and I wrote out full answers to them, but I never sent it off. The initial approach and process seemed rather automated which was shall we say, 'unsual'.

The Antagonist said...

If you manage to find anything out, do let me know.

As for TPS, they have pages of interviews with bloggers using exactly the same questions.

Yes I checked out TPS when they first asked.

The paranoia raging inside me (with much justification I should add) pictures a psychoanalyst scribbling furiosly then licking stamps - but I am old fashioned in may ways.
